David R. Gobeil, CPA, CA, MSc, CFP®
David develops products and services to assist other personal financial planners. He is the author of the Canadian Retirement Planner's Software and the editor of The Personal Financial Planner's Manual. In 1997, David successfully challenged the Certified Financial Planner® Examination.
In 1971, David was the first student to graduate from the University of Toronto with a Master's Degree in Computer Science. He then completed his articles with Price Waterhouse obtaining the Chartered Accountant designation. In 1973, David joined the faculty of McGill University as Associate Director of the Chartered Accountancy Program. In 1978, he moved to McMaster University to teach and further pursue the academic life but changed course returning to the accounting profession as Director of Education with Coopers & Lybrand.
In 1986, David left the accounting firm and was asked to develop and present Executive Seminars on Personal Financial Planning for the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants. David also served as the Chairman of the CICA Personal Financial Planning Conference. During this time, he wrote the initial version of the Personal Financial Planner's Manual and programmed the Canadian Retirement Planner's Software.
Upon the introduction of the Certified Financial Planner® designation in Canada in 1997, Gobeil & Associates was contracted by the Canadian Institute of Financial Planning and the Life Underwriters Association of Canada (now Advocis) to develop courses for their qualifying programs for the CFP® designation. He was also contracted by the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants, Certified Management accountants and Certified General Accountants to present a one-day preparation seminar for 12,000 of their members who were writing the CFP® Exams.
As interest in the CFP® designation increased, Gobeil & Associates developed the Collection of 1,000 Questions, which has now been used by over 20,000 candidates, and presented exam preparation courses across Canada to candidates from many financial services firms. In retirement, David continues to update the study aids offered by Gobeil & Associates and is developing a new and improved version of Gobeil Tutor, the software used to present the study aids.
